Eve: The Woman Designed by God and the Woman Reinterpreted by the Church

From Greatness to Submission: How Christianity Redefined Womanhood

Introduction Since her creation, woman has been endowed with divine attributes that position her as a perfect being, designed to play a central role in the creation and perpetuation of humanity. However, throughout history, these attributes have been distorted and minimized by power structures that sought to subjugate women under a narrative of submission and obedience. The history of women is filled with wisdom, strength, leadership, and love; reclaiming these values and making visible the attributes with which she was created can greatly contribute to changing the narrative that the Church has imposed for centuries.

The 24 Attributes of Eve and Their Historical Distortion

11. Intelligence

Eve was endowed with profound intelligence, allowing her to make wise decisions and understand divine will. Her discernment is essential in her actions and decisions and in her role as a mother and caregiver. However, Christianity denied women access to theological and philosophical education for centuries. Even today, many churches reject the idea of women interpreting Scripture or studying theology.

12. Gentleness

Eve’s gentleness is reflected not only in her appearance but in her calm character, inspiring love and respect in others. However, Christianity reinterpreted this quality as submission and docility, imposing the notion that women should not challenge male authority or express strong emotions that contradict a man's will.

13. Love

Eve was created with divine love, capable of embracing all creation. This love symbolizes universal love, compassion, and connection with the divine. In contrast, Christianity reduced female love to sacrifice, imposing the belief that women must love unconditionally, even in abusive situations, and teaching them that their love should be inexhaustible without expecting reciprocity.

14. Wealth

Eve represents a source of spiritual and emotional wealth, beyond material possessions. Her treasure is internal, composed of virtues and values. Christianity restricted women’s economic independence, denying them the right to own or manage property or work without male oversight.

15. Dignity

Eve reflects an innate dignity that positions her as a companion and mother of humanity. However, Christianity subordinated female dignity to marital status and chastity. Single, divorced, or widowed women who did not conform to the Church’s moral norms were seen as unworthy.

16. Clarity of Expression

Eve possesses a great capacity for communication, reflecting the spiritual clarity that unites humans with the divine. Despite this, women’s voices were silenced in religious spaces. Even today, in some Christian traditions, women are forbidden from preaching or expressing theological opinions.

17. Delicacy

Eve embodies delicacy, both physically and behaviorally. This attribute showcases the tenderness and sensitivity that Eve brings to the world, a quality that also reflects divine care for all creation. Eve’s delicacy does not signify fragility but rather sensitivity and empathy. Christianity transformed it into imposed fragility, defining women as emotionally dependent and physically weak.

18. Humility

Eve was created with humility, maintaining an attitude of respect and submission before God. However, Christianity distorted this virtue into self-annihilation, imposing that women should renounce their voice, obey without question, and accept their position of inferiority with "Christian humility."

19. Purity

Eve’s purity reflects humanity’s original state before the creation of sin. Christianity reduced purity to virginity and chastity; women were defined by their reproductive function, and the female body was turned into a symbol of sin if it did not meet these standards.

20. Fertility

Eve was blessed with the ability to give life. However, fertility became a mandatory duty; women were defined by their capacity to procreate, and their worth was measured by their motherhood.

21. Generosity

Eve is naturally generous, sharing with her family and creation. Her generosity reflects a willingness to give, a fundamental virtue in her role in creation. This generosity was exploited, imposing that women should give everything to their families, the Church, and the community without expecting recognition or compensation.

22. Compassion

Eve’s compassion makes her the mother of all human beings, showing empathy and care. The Church promoted female compassion toward others but never toward themselves. Women were expected to forgive and endure everything without complaint, even in abusive situations.

23. Splendor

Eve was created with splendor and dignity. However, this splendor was restricted to the domestic sphere. Women were prohibited from standing out in public or claiming recognition.

24. Integrity

Eve was endowed with moral and spiritual integrity. Christianity distorted this virtue into blind obedience, demanding that women neither question, doubt, nor exercise moral autonomy, as their virtue lay in unquestioningly following the rules imposed by the Church.

Conclusion

Christianity transformed women’s divine attributes into tools of control and limitation, imposing that they must be submissive, sacrificial, and dependent. Dismantling these thought structures is not easy, but it is essential for women to reclaim the place granted to them by the Creator.
